Gas Cooker Installation Cost: What You'll Pay in 2026

Thinking of getting a new gas cooker fitted? Here's a straight-talking breakdown of what gas cooker installation costs in the West Midlands — and what affects the price.

By Nicholas King, Gas Safe Engineer July 2026 5 min read

Gas cooker installation cost in the UK typically ranges from £90 to £200, depending on the type of cooker, whether new pipework is needed, and who you use. At NK Gas, we charge a fixed £90 for a standard freestanding gas cooker installation — no surprises on the invoice. Here's everything you need to know before booking.

Why You Can't Just Plug a Gas Cooker In Yourself

It's worth getting this out of the way first. Unlike electric cookers, you cannot legally install a gas cooker yourself unless you are Gas Safe registered. Gas is a Class 2 flammable substance — getting the connection wrong can cause gas leaks, fires, or carbon monoxide poisoning. It's not a job for a YouTube tutorial.

All gas work in the UK must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer. You can check any engineer's registration — including ours — on the Gas Safe Register website. NK Gas is registered under number #568305.

Fitting a gas cooker yourself also invalidates your home insurance. If something goes wrong and the insurer finds out it wasn't done by a Gas Safe engineer, you won't be covered.

What Does Gas Cooker Installation Cost?

Here's a realistic breakdown of what you can expect to pay across the West Midlands in 2026:

Job Type Typical Cost
Standard freestanding gas cooker installation £90–£120
Gas cooker installation + old cooker disconnection £120–£160
Range cooker installation £120–£200
New gas pipework (if required) £80–£300+ extra

At NK Gas, our gas cooker installation service is a fixed £90 for a standard freestanding cooker where there's an existing gas point. That includes connecting the cooker, pressure testing the connection, and checking everything is working safely before we leave.

What Affects the Price?

Several things can push the cost up from the base installation price:

  • Old cooker disconnection — if you need your existing gas cooker disconnected and removed first, that's additional work. We offer a standalone cooker disconnection service if you just need the old one taken off.
  • No existing gas point — if there's no gas connection near the cooker location, new pipework is needed. This adds time and materials and can significantly increase the cost.
  • Range cookers — range cookers are bigger, heavier, and often need a higher gas pressure supply. They take longer to install and typically cost more.
  • Access issues — tight kitchen layouts or pipework in awkward places can add time to the job.
  • Location — engineers in London charge significantly more than those in the West Midlands. If you're in Wolverhampton, Walsall, Cannock or the surrounding area, you'll generally pay less than the national average.

Freestanding Cooker vs Range Cooker — Does It Make a Difference?

Yes. A standard freestanding gas cooker — the kind you buy from Currys or AO — sits on the floor and slides into a gap between cabinets. It connects to a flexible hose and a bayonet fitting. Most installations are straightforward and done in under an hour.

Range cookers are different. They're larger, often require a rigid gas connection rather than a flexible hose, and some models need a higher gas pressure input. If you're having a range cooker installed, get a quote before booking — it's not the same job as a standard cooker. We cover range cooker installation across the West Midlands.

How to Find a Reliable Gas Cooker Installer

The most important thing is to use a Gas Safe registered engineer. Beyond that, here's what to look for:

  • Check they're actually on the Gas Safe Register (don't just take their word for it)
  • Ask for a fixed price, not an hourly rate — you'll know exactly what you're paying
  • Check Google reviews — look for consistent, recent feedback
  • Make sure they're local — a local engineer is faster to book and doesn't charge travel

NK Gas has over 149 five-star Google reviews and has been covering Wolverhampton, Walsall, Cannock, Dudley, and across the West Midlands for years. We're fully Gas Safe registered (#568305) and give you a fixed price upfront.

What Happens During the Installation?

Here's what to expect when a Gas Safe engineer comes to fit your new cooker:

  • The engineer checks the existing gas supply and isolates it safely
  • If there's an old cooker, it's disconnected and capped off
  • The new cooker is connected using an approved flexible hose and bayonet fitting
  • A gas tightness test is carried out on the connection
  • The cooker is lit and tested to confirm it's working correctly
  • You're shown how to use the ignition and safety features

The whole job typically takes 30–60 minutes for a standard freestanding cooker. You'll need to be home for the appointment, and it's worth clearing the area around the cooker beforehand to save time.

Gas cooker installation in the West Midlands typically costs £90–£150 for a standard freestanding cooker. NK Gas charges a fixed £90 where there's an existing gas point. Costs increase if new pipework is needed or if you also need your old cooker disconnected.
No — it's illegal to install a gas cooker yourself in the UK unless you're Gas Safe registered. All gas appliance work must be done by a qualified engineer. DIY gas work is dangerous, puts your household at risk, and invalidates your home insurance.
A standard freestanding gas cooker installation usually takes 30–60 minutes. If new pipework is needed or the old cooker needs disconnecting first, it can take longer. We'll give you a realistic time estimate when you book.
You don't need a separate CP12 certificate for a domestic cooker installation. Your engineer should provide a work completion notice confirming the job was carried out to Gas Safe standards. Landlords fitting cookers in rental properties have different legal requirements.
