Gas Cooker Installation: What You Need to Know Before Your New Cooker Arrives

Just bought a new gas cooker? Here's everything you need to know about getting it connected safely, legally, and quickly — including what's included in our £90 all-in price.

By Nicholas King, Gas Safe Engineer June 2026 6 min read

Gas cooker installation is one of those jobs that looks straightforward — but it must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer. It is a legal requirement, not just a recommendation. Whether you've ordered a brand-new freestanding cooker, a built-in oven, or a range cooker, you need a qualified engineer to make the gas connection before you cook a single meal. Here's what the process involves, what to expect, and why NK Gas Services keeps it simple with a flat £90 all-in price.

Why Only a Gas Safe Engineer Can Install Your Cooker

Under the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998, it is illegal for anyone who is not Gas Safe registered to work on a gas appliance. That includes connecting a new cooker to the gas supply. It doesn't matter whether you're handy around the house — the law is clear, and the consequences of getting it wrong can be serious.

Gas leaks from poorly fitted connections have caused house fires and carbon monoxide incidents. Beyond the safety risk, connecting a gas appliance yourself could invalidate your home insurance. If something went wrong and your insurer discovered the work wasn't done by a registered engineer, you'd have no cover.

You can verify any engineer's Gas Safe registration — including ours (#568305) — at the official Gas Safe Register website. Always check before letting anyone work on your gas.

What's Included in NK Gas's £90 Installation Price

A lot of tradespeople quote a low headline price and then add on parts, call-out fees, or certificates as extras. NK Gas Services doesn't work that way. The gas cooker installation price of £90 is all-in. Here's exactly what's covered:

  • A new flexible gas hose (the old one is replaced as standard — reusing worn hoses is a common cause of gas leaks)
  • All fittings and connectors needed to make the connection
  • A full pressure and tightness test of the gas supply
  • Functional test of all burners and the oven
  • A gas safety certificate confirming the installation was completed to standard

No call-out charge. No surprise extras. We cover Wolverhampton, Walsall, Cannock, Dudley, Birmingham, and the wider West Midlands.

What the Installation Process Involves

When the engineer arrives, the process is methodical and doesn't take long for a standard freestanding cooker. Here's what happens:

  • The engineer checks the existing gas supply point (the bayonet fitting or isolation valve) and confirms it's in good working order
  • The old appliance is disconnected if there's one in place
  • A new flexible hose is fitted between the gas supply and the cooker — these are replaced as standard since they degrade over time
  • The cooker is connected, positioned, and levelled
  • A tightness test is carried out on the gas supply to confirm there are no leaks
  • All burners and the oven are lit and checked for correct operation
  • A certificate is issued and the job is done

Most freestanding gas cooker installations take between 30 and 60 minutes. You'll be cooking the same day.

Freestanding vs Built-In: Is There a Difference?

The gas connection process is essentially the same for both, but built-in installations can take a little longer depending on the kitchen layout and cabinetry involved.

With a freestanding cooker, the appliance simply slots into a gap in the kitchen run. The gas connection is made at the back and the cooker is slid into place. Straightforward.

With a built-in oven and separate gas hob, the hob is set into a worktop cutout and the oven goes into a housing unit. The gas connection point needs to be accessible and in the right position. If you're having a new gas hob installation alongside a built-in electric oven, the engineer only handles the gas side — the electrical connection for the oven is a separate job.

Not sure what you've got or what you need? Just call or message us and we'll talk it through before you book.

Range Cooker Installation

Range cookers — think AGA, Rangemaster, Falcon, or Leisure — are a slightly different job. They're larger, heavier, and often require a higher gas flow rate than a standard cooker. Some models also need a dedicated gas supply rather than sharing with other appliances.

If you've got a range cooker that needs connecting, it's worth checking that your existing gas supply point is in the right position and that the supply pipe is the correct diameter. Many older kitchens have a standard-size supply that may need upgrading to meet the burner demand on a large range.

We offer a dedicated range cooker installation service across the West Midlands. If you're unsure about compatibility, an engineer can assess the supply before you commit to a purchase.

What to Check Before the Engineer Arrives

A bit of preparation makes the visit quicker and smoother. Here's what to have ready:

  • Make sure the cooker is on-site and accessible — the engineer needs it present to connect and test it
  • Clear the area around the installation point so the engineer can work safely
  • Know where your gas meter and isolation tap are in case they need to be turned off
  • Check whether your existing gas supply point is in the right position — it should be within reach of the new cooker without the hose stretching or kinking
  • If you're removing an old appliance yourself beforehand, leave it disconnected only if you have already had the gas supply safely capped by a registered engineer
  • Have the cooker's installation manual available if you can find it — some models have specific requirements

If anything doesn't look quite right when you're doing these checks, just mention it when you book. It's better to flag potential issues early than to discover them mid-installation.

How Long Does Gas Cooker Installation Take?

For a standard freestanding gas cooker, expect the engineer to be with you for around 30 to 60 minutes. That includes the connection, the safety test, and the certificate.

Built-in hob installations are similar in time, while range cooker installations typically run to 60–90 minutes. If there are any complications — like an existing supply point that needs repositioning or a faulty isolation valve — the engineer will let you know before any additional work is carried out.
